Snowpack stability

The snowpack is well bonded and stable in general.

Likelihood of triggering

Triggering is generally possible only from high additional loads in isolated areas of very steep, extreme terrain. Only small and medium natural avalanches are possible.

    The avalanche problem is related to a weakening of the snowpack due to the presence of liquid water. Water infiltrates the snowpack due to melt or rain.

    Good timing and trip planning are important. Consider avalanche runout zones.

    Wind slabs are formed when loose snow in near-surface layers (new snow or old snow) is transported and deposited by wind.

    Avoid wind-drifted deposits in steep terrain.

Stability

15cm of new snow fell Sunday night with little wind, Friday the wind picked up and heavy trasport occured with drifts to 50+cm on SE facing slopes (Lee to the NW). Below 1700m, rain/heat as formed a surface crust. The new snow fell on a snowpack that has seen significant rain below 1800m, drainage was well established and the snowpack down this low is primarily melt forms. Any evidence of previous crusts has been hard to find, as they had broken down at most elevation bands and on most aspects, bar the Southerly 1/2. The lower part of the pack was very well consolidated.

Snow quality

Mt Hutt had a number of skier and explosve triggered, wind slab and loose wet avalanches to size 1 on the 11/9. If you see any avalanches, please report them in the public observations section of the website.

Weather

Fine until mid-afternoon then some snow. Not much wind. Winds Westerly 30 km/h. Freezing level 1700 metres.
