Snowpack stability

The snowpack is only moderately well bonded on some steep slopes; otherwise well bonded in general.

Likelihood of triggering

Triggering is possible, primarily from high additional loads, particularly on the indicated steep slopes. Very large natural avalanches are unlikely.

    Wind slabs are formed when loose snow in near-surface layers (new snow or old snow) is transported and deposited by wind.

    Avoid wind-drifted deposits in steep terrain.

Stability

Cover above 1800m is reasonably consistent, particularly in the west and south of the park, and a little intermittent below. There is a resilient ice crust below 2000m that is evident where the snow has been wind-scoured on western aspects in particular. New snow on the 10th and wind from the southwest will have transported that snow to lee slopes, producing wind slab danger. Significant wind transport has been evident on the morning of the 11th and this is continuing. Wind slab may be evident on steep, shady slopes on north and eastern half aspects, particularly in the high alpine.

Snow quality

Showers and mainly cloudy. Southwesterly gales easing during the morning. Freezing level rising from 1400m to 1800m.
